Dear Fernando,

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.

You are the bravest, smartest, funniest, sweetest boy I know.  Yes, you did plot to rob the Peter Project and even set yourself to rob the home of the very people who love you the most.  But, sweet boy, this is grace.  Grace is the fact that your willingness to do those things only made us love you more.

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.

You are fourteen years old and have lived most of those years on your own.  That’s brave.  That’s smart.  You have fed yourself, clothed yourself and stayed alive in an environment where 14 years old is not too young to die.

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.

Yesterday, you took a GIANT, oh-so-brave step toward a better future.  You willingly entered into rehab.  And all along the way, you allowed your mother to sit by your side, cry over you, and talk about how desperate she is for you to get better.  The one who abandoned you is crying over you.  The one who had no idea what you were up to is telling you how much she loves you.  I know that when she hugged you, and your arms lay stiff by your side, it was your sacrifice of love to ALLOW her to hug you.  Because underneath it all, you are a sweetheart and you really don’t want to add to anyone’s pain.

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.

We met when you were 11 years old.  How time has flown.  Now you have “grown up” and gone down a path that is dangerous and heartbreaking.  And you CAME TO US saying you wanted help.  YOU CAME TO US.

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.

Well, today is your first day in your new home.  Today is the first day that we will all be able to sleep better knowing you are safe.  Today you start your new life.  And again,

I am so proud of you, and I love you to the moon and back.
